What is the Story of the Bloody Mary Cocktail?

The story of the Bloody Mary cocktail began when a bartender who found the vodka brought into the country by the Russians during the prohibition era in America tasteless, wanted to sweeten this drink with tomato juice.
In November 1911, Harry’s New York Bar opened in Paris. This place, which is important in cocktail culture, discovered a cocktail during the era of prohibition in America. The Bloody Mary Cocktail was created in this bar by Fernand Petoit in 1921.

Petoit found the vodka brought by the Russians fleeing from the revolution tasteless. Upon this, he decided to make a cocktail using canned tomato juice that he met in America. By mixing vodka, certain spices, and tomato juice in measured amounts, he created the Bloody Mary cocktail variety.

When it was first made, the cocktail was called the “Bucket of Blood”. It began to be recognized with the sales made by bartender Petoit in the bar of his hotel in New York. The spices and sauces found on the new continent have also been added to the recipe. This cocktail was called the “After Drink” or the hangover cocktail by those who drank it in America. During this time, it was also named “Red Sniper” in Turkish translation.

The cocktail, which quickly spread to other bar menus in the United States, was finally named Bloody Mary cocktail, inspired by the name of Queen Mary I of England, also known as “Bloody Mary”.
